Period: Koto, probably Muromachi
Sugata: Hira-zukuri, iori-mune.
Overall length: 9.37 inches (238.00 mm)
Nagasa: 6.38 inches (162.00 mm) long.
Nakago: Ubu, 2.99 inches (76.00 mm), one mekugi-ana, katte-agari yasurime, and ha agari kurijiri.
Moto-haba: 0.89 inches (22.70 mm). Moto-gasane: 0.28 inches (7.20 mm).
Sori: 0.00 inches (0.00 mm).
Hamon: Notare, ending in a ko-maru boshi with kaeri. Lots of activity in the hamon, which will become clearer once it has been polished. The blade also shows muneyaki for the length of the blade.
Hada: Difficult to see, but looks to be mokume/itame. It looks as if the steel should be silvery when polished. What is visible of the hamon appears to be sparkly.
Blade condition: In old polish. A few scuffs, and surface erosion. A miniscule chip off the tip of the kissaki; a very small fraction of a millimetre. Nothing a polish wouldn't easily put right. No fatal flaws and no cracks. See photos.
In koshirae. See pictures.
A very nice tanto, probably Bizen. It could do with a polish; in fact once polished it would look gorgeous. It would also no doubt be a very good idea to send it to shinsa.
